Focus On Service
Make a Difference in the Life of a Child
This year make a resolution to make a difference in the life of a child. South Bend and the surrounding area are home to a number of charities that help children and youth of all ages with a variety of needs. El Campito, Inc promotes the “educational, social, and economic success of culturally diverse children and families” through programs for those most in need. El Campito has a variety of volunteer opportunities, from working in the classroom with children to spring and fall clean up or office support. Big Brothers and Big Sisters of St. Joseph County provides one-to-one mentoring for school-aged children and are looking for volunteers willing to make a weekly to bi-monthly commitment. Youth Service Bureau of St. Joseph County is a community-based, non-profit organization that offers free services to teens and young adults at critical points in their lives. Among their many services and programs are a Crisis Hotline and the Porch Light Transitional Program, which helps young homeless mothers and their children. Residents received counseling and education, as well as job and independent living skills while living in the 24-hour supervised apartment setting. If you’d like to volunteer but don’t have much time, the Boys and Girls Club of St. Joseph County’s 4Kids program provides school-aged children with homework tutoring. Volunteers in the 4Kids program give just one hour of their time each week, and The South Bend Community School Corporation needs volunteers to read to a child for 30 minutes once a week during the school day.
